Visiting Chelsea Flower Show

Sigh... London in the spring is glorious. Everything blooms. Wisteria abounds.  The weather is cool and refreshing—just as Texas begins to heat up to those triple-digit temps.

Each May, the RHS Chelsea Flower Show draws gardeners, philanthropists, celebrities, and even royalty to the Royal Hospital Chelsea grounds to celebrate the best in horticulture. As someone aspiring to a green thumb, I was looking forward to soaking up inspiration and beauty at the show, but also experiencing London with a small group of Atlas First travelers.

Of course, our time there was also full with: the best shopping in the world, floating down the Thames, high tea, bespoke martinis and walking through history from London City, to Cambridge and Oxford. But those are stories for another reel!

Planning Your Visit to the RHS Chelsea Flower Show

When are tickets available?
Next year the event takes place May 19-23, 2026, with tickets typically on sale in October through the RHS website and the AXS app.

Member Days (Tuesday & Wednesday) are reserved for RHS members, so if you live in the UK or visit often, consider a membership. These early days are quieter and often have better access to top displays.  The Best in Show prizes are announced on Tuesday with camera crews and fanfare surrounding prize winning exhibitors.

Tickets do sell out a few months in advance, but resale tickets are available closer to the show via AXS—including for Members’ Days.

What to Expect at the Show

Shopping:
Vendors line the main promenade selling everything from floral perfumes and garden tools to seed packets, stationery, fresh flower bouquets, and chic garden wear.

Food & Amenities:
There are plenty of food stalls, picnic tables, water bottle refill stations, Pimm’s Cups on hand, and clean restroom facilities.

What to Wear:
This isn’t Royal Ascot, but it is the perfect event for springtime fashion. Think light dresses, linen, fun florals—but most importantly, comfortable shoes (trainers or boots are best). The weather is unpredictable, so bring both a hat and a light jacket.

The show goes on rain or shine.

Tips for Making the Most of Your Visit

  • How long should you stay?
If you’re casually interested, 2 hours is plenty. But if you’re a garden lover, plan to spend 4–5 hours exploring the show gardens, indoor exhibits, and shopping areas.

  • When’s the best time to go?
Arrive at opening time to beat the crowds and take your time. The venue gets busier as the day goes on, and there’s a second wave of attendees after 3:30 PM with afternoon-entry tickets.

  • Re-entry policy:
Tickets are single entry only, so check the schedule ahead of time in case there are any evening events you want to stick around for.

  • What can you bring?
There’s a light bag check (no metal detectors). I brought a book, snacks, and water, and had no issues. You’ll find spots to sit, relax, and enjoy a bite between exhibits.

  • Can I bring plants back to the U.S.?
Officially, U.S. customs has restrictions on bringing live plants and seeds back from abroad. You can check the official rules here.  Unofficially, did I buy things that grow? Yes, I did. 🌱
